JAMB announces special arrangements for UTME candidates with disabilities

According to Mrs. Olajumoke Adeleke, the Ibadan Zonal Director of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), candidates with disabilities will be catered to in the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Adeleke stated in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Ibadan that the JAMB has made provisions for various categories of disabilities, ensuring that adequate arrangements have been put in place.

He said: “I believe that there is provision for them in the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo Town.

“The number of hours for sitting for UTME is two hours, but for the physically challenged we always give them time to write their examination. There is extra time for them.

Mrs. Adeleke, the Ibadan Zonal Director of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has assured the public that technical glitches during the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have been resolved promptly. She stated that no candidate would be left unattended to.

It is noteworthy that special centres were created for people living with disabilities in Oyo, Ekiti, and Lagos for the South-West zone during UTME registration, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Meanwhile, there have been mixed reactions to the conduct of the 2023 UTME exercise, with some parents calling for improvements. One parent, Mr. Olusojo Afolabi, commented that different people had varying experiences concerning the UTME. Afolabi added that some candidates encountered issues that did not originate from them during the examination, and called for annual improvements in the conduct of the examination.

Afolabi further recounted his experience and that of his son, stating that the exercise scheduled for noon did not start until 4.00 pm.

The delay caused untold hardship for the candidates and their parents who accompanied them to the examination centre.

“One way or the other it would affect the performance of the candidates, because the delay was least expected.

“One would have thought that adequate preparation had been made to checkmate the glitches,” he said.

Mrs. Esther Olayinka shared a positive experience with the UTME examination, stating that she found the conduct of the examination to be wonderful.

My daughter’s centre ran smoothly as there were no complaints. She was scheduled for a 9.00 a.m examination and they were already settling in as of 8.55 a.m and the exercise kick-off and ended as slated.

“The only concern I had was the distance from where she wrote the examination to her residence, it was quite far. Aside from the distance, every other thing went well,” Olayinka said. (NAN)
