The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has verified that three individuals apprehended by soldiers during the recently concluded governorship election in Kogi State are indeed police officers.
The incident occurred in Okene, where soldiers on election duty intercepted black-colored security vehicles and arrested the occupants. Additional arrests were made during the election, targeting suspected political thugs.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP acknowledged that three of the apprehended suspects were police personnel. He expressed gratitude to the officers who participated in the off-circle elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states while vowing to take action against any officers found to have acted improperly.
The statement emphasized, “In Kogi State, it has been confirmed that three officers who were arrested by soldiers and handed over to the Police were indeed police personnel but were found to be escorting a VIP contrary to directives. Others who were arrested by election officers escorting VIPs during the polls will also be sanctioned as such actions are against established protocols, and the officers involved will face disciplinary measures as a consequence.”
