The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has given orders to crack down on the assailants responsible for the killing of approximately eight security personnel in Imo State on Tuesday.
Unidentified gunmen launched an attack on Tuesday, targeting and killing security operatives, including members of the police, military, and officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.
A viral video depicted the tragic incident, where the security personnel were not only killed but also set ablaze along with their patrol vehicle.
In response to this horrifying act, the Police hierarchy released a statement on Wednesday through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, strongly condemning the attack. They assured that the culprits would be identified and prosecuted. The statement clarified that the victims had been responding to a fake distress call from the area when they were ambushed.
The statement, in part, reads, “The Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has, however, assured the public that the NPF is fully committed to collaborating closely with other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation into this heinous act while relentlessly pursuing the cause of justice.”
“He assures that the Force would redouble its efforts to bring the culprits to book and guarantee the safety of our officers and the security of our communities while earnestly imploring the public to remain calm and vigilant.”
“Ag. IGP Olukayode Egbetokun also extended thoughts and prayers to the families of the fallen heroes, pledging that the sacrifices made by their loved ones will not be in vain.”
