The government of Congo Brazzaville has refuted claims suggesting that the military has overthrown the current civilian government led by President Denis Sassou Nguesso. Reports had been circulating, albeit unconfirmed, about the military attempting to seize power and oust the government.
Thierry Moungalla, the country’s Minister of Information, has reassured citizens, dismissing these claims as “fake news.” In a statement on his official page, Moungalla urged the public to continue their activities calmly, emphasizing the prevailing calm in the country.
These coup concerns arise in Congo just a month after a group of military officers in Gabon successfully took control. The coup occurred shortly after Gabon’s election body declared incumbent President Ali Bongo the winner of a third term, maintaining his family’s rule over the oil-rich Central African nation of 2.3 million people.
This coup marks the 10th such incident in West and Central Africa since 2017, causing regional and international concern over political stability. In July, Niger experienced a military takeover, sending shockwaves throughout the region and involving countries with strategic interests in the area.
