Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was brought before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory to face corruption charges filed by the Federal Government.
Emefiele, dressed in a blue Guinea Brocade babaringa and a Hausa cap, appeared in court accompanied by his lead counsel, Mathew Burkaa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in compliance with a court order.
The charges against Emefiele revolve around allegations of granting corrupt advantages to a CBN staff member, Mrs Saadat Ramalan Yaro, through the awarding of various contracts. However, Emefiele denied all six counts brought against him.
Rotimi Oyedepo, also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), led the legal team representing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in prosecuting the case on behalf of the Federal Government.
As of the latest report, a heated legal battle was ongoing regarding Emefiele’s bail request pending his trial. The ruling on the bail application is expected to be made by Justice Hamza Muazu.
