The Federal Government has announced its intention to address the needs of Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) by directing heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to establish disability desks and assign officials to manage them.
During a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, Mr. Mohammed Isa, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Disability Matters, emphasized the importance of developing inclusive policies and creating a supportive environment for people with disabilities.
Isa further stated that his office would engage relevant stakeholders to discuss the amendment of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018. The aim is to align the Act with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and address any existing flaws in the law.
He also expressed his commitment to ensuring that Federal Government palliative initiatives include provisions for PWDs, such as setting aside quotas for their benefit. Additionally, Isa mentioned plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Transport to formulate transportation policies that cater to the needs of PWDs, recognizing the importance of accessible movement for their participation in society.
Furthermore, he intends to engage the humanitarian and poverty alleviation agency to include PWDs in relief programs and work towards lifting them out of poverty.
The establishment of disability desks in MDAs and the proposed policy changes demonstrate the government’s efforts to promote inclusivity and support PLWDs in various aspects of their lives.
