Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, has emphasized the importance of training and certifying skilled craftsmen in Nigeria.

The aim is to enable them to undertake professional jobs within the country and even internationally, thus reducing Nigeria’s dependence on costly imports of skilled artisans.

Nnaji made these remarks during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Centre for Technology Management (NACETEM) and its academic and industrial technical partners in Abuja.

The Minister highlighted that the Technology and Innovation centers established by the Ministry across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones will facilitate the training of welders to obtain the International Welding Certification, aligning with global standards.

He drew attention to the shortage of skilled artisans in Nigeria, using the example of the Dangote Refinery, which had to rely on imported welders despite the availability of millions of welders within the country. Nnaji emphasized the need for ISO certification among Nigerian welders and mentioned the significant expenses incurred by bringing in foreign artisans for projects such as the Dangote Refinery.

The Ministry is actively collaborating with the Nigerian Welding Institute to provide training and certification for welders, not only for domestic employment but also for opportunities abroad.
