FCTA Shuts Down Prominent Abuja Orphanage, Rescues 23 Children

On Monday, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) took the decision to seal off the Priesthood Orphanage located in Karon Majigi village, Abuja. This action followed the rescue of approximately 23 children, aged between one and 14 years old, from the facility.

According to reliable sources, these children were allegedly trafficked from Plateau State. Mrs Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, the Mandate Secretary of the Women Affairs Secretariat under the FCTA, disclosed this information during the handover of the children to Mrs Caroline Dafur, the Plateau State Commissioner for Women Affairs, in Abuja.

Benjamins-Laniyi emphasized that the recertification of all orphanages operating within the territory had been authorized by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. She stated, “Using this incident as an example, one of the first actions I have taken is to obtain approval for the recertification of orphanage homes in Abuja. The Minister has approved a comprehensive and meticulous reprofiling and recertification process for all orphanages in Abuja.”

The mandate secretary further informed that her secretariat was already collaborating with Dafur to reunite the rescued children with their families. It was revealed that some of these children had been residing in the unaccredited orphanage since 2019.

The closure of the prominent Abuja orphanage and subsequent rescue of the children highlight the commitment of FCTA to safeguarding the welfare and well-being of vulnerable children within the territory.

Efforts are underway to ensure that all orphanages in Abuja meet the necessary standards and operate in compliance with regulations to guarantee the safety and proper care of children under their supervision.
