Manchester City thrashed Manchester United 4-1 on Sunday evening, March 6 in an  entertaining clash at the Etihad.

In a match which saw the stadium fans don krainian colors in show of solidarity over the ongoing war with Russia, Kevin De Bruyne’s double, and a Jadon Sancho’s equaliser, saw the hosts go in at half-time 2-1 up.

 

Riyad Mahrez’ second-half brace made Pep Guardiola’s men end up comfortable 4-1 winners.

City were the better side throughout the game, with Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea producing save after save to hide the shame of his leaky defence.

City were well structured, and they were winning the ball back well in midfield, with an insistence in playing like a well oiled unit.

After the first half, which didn’t have star player Cristiano Ronaldo in the matchday squad, Guardiola’s side upped the tempo in the second half, and United struggled to keep up. 

 

When the visitors pressed, it became a normal sight for United’s defence to be breached.

City’s third goal came from a corner, with Mahrez finding space on the edge of the area to guide the ball home, after his teammate’s crowded the six yard area to leave him with space.

His shot deflected off Harry Maguire who, had a game to forget.

That was not the end, City kept coming, and the game felt done with twenty minutes to go.

Mahrez made it four at the 90th minute, firing the ball at David De Gea to add injury to insult, as it hit him before landing in the back of the net.

 

City remain six points clear of Liverpool, albeit having played a game more.  Manchester United have played three games more than Arsenal and Tottenham. 

Arsenal are now a point ahead of United, and have better goal difference.

Meanwhile, West ham have played as many games as United and are only two points off Rangnick’s side.
