Edo NUJ Condemns Assault on Members during APC Primary Election

The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the attack on its members by political thugs during the collation and announcement of results for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election in the state. The union expressed its outrage and called for immediate action to address the situation.

During an emergency press conference in Benin City, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, Chairman of the Edo State NUJ, stated the union’s position. He described the attacks on journalists as disgraceful, shameful, and completely unacceptable. Alenkhe also demanded that the State Police Command thoroughly investigate the incident, apprehend the perpetrators, and ensure that they face prosecution.

In addition, the NUJ called on the APC leadership to take responsibility for the incident. They urged the party to replace all the damaged equipment belonging to the journalists who were covering the event and to cover the medical expenses of those injured during the attack. Furthermore, the union demanded an unreserved apology from the APC.

The NUJ emphasized the need for transparency and cooperation in the investigation, requesting the management of the hotel where the incident took place to provide the CCTV footage of the attack to assist the police in their investigation. They stressed that the upcoming Edo State election in September 2024 should not be treated as a matter of life or death, but rather as an opportunity for peaceful democratic participation.
