Biography

David Van Cortlandt Crosby (August 14, 1941) was an American singer, guitarist, and composer. He founded the Byrds, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and his solo career.

The second son of Oscar-winning Wall Street cameraman Floyd Crosby and Macy’s salesman Aliph Van Cortlandt Whitehead, Crosby was born in Los Angeles, California.

His mother—granddaughter of Bishop of Pittsburgh Cortlandt Whitehead—was a Van Cortlandt, and his father was a Van Rensselaer.

Crosby was Ethan Crosby’s younger brother. He attended University Elementary School in Los Angeles, Crane Country Day School in Montecito, and Laguna Blanca School in Santa Barbara for elementary and junior high in California.

He played with Terry Callier in Chicago and Greenwich Village, but they didn’t record.

He played with Les Baxter’s Balladeers about 1962. Crosby’s 1963 solo debut was produced by Jim Dickson.

He created the Jet Set with Jim McGuinn and Gene Clark in early 1964, then the Byrds with bassist Chris Hillman and drummer Michael Clarke.

After the Monterey Pop Festival, Crosby departed the Byrds due to artistic disagreements.

Crosby recorded several solo albums and jammed with Stephen Stills after producing Joni Mitchell’s 1968 debut LP. Graham Nash joined later.

Crosby, Stills & Nash’s 1969 first album made them mainstream stars.

In 1969, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) performed at Woodstock for the second time after adding Stills’ old Buffalo Springfield bandmate Neil Young.

If I Could Only Remember My Name, Crosby’s 1971 solo debut, included Nash, Young, Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, and Santana musicians.

Crosby founded CPR, or Crosby, Pevar & Raymond, with session guitarist Jeff Pevar and his son, pianist James Raymond, in 1996. They produced two studio albums and two live albums before disbanding in 2004.

Crosby, Stills & Nash (1991) and the Byrds (1991) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1997).

In May of 1987, Crosby weds Jan Dance in a ceremony that took place in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Church of Religious Science. At the time, he was 45 years old, whereas Dance was just 35.

James Raymond Crosby was born to Crosby and Celia Crawford Ferguson in 1962. James Raymond was put for adoption but eventually found his way back to Crosby as an adult.

He also had three other children: a daughter named Erika, who he had with his ex-girlfriend Jackie Guthrie; a daughter named Donovan Crosby, who he had with his ex-girlfriend Debbie Donovan; and a son named Django Crosby, who he had with his wife Jan Dance after extensive fertility treatments while Crosby’s liver was failing. Erika was named after Jackie Guthrie, and Donovan was named after Debbie Donovan.

Cause Of Death

On the 19th of January in the year 2023, David Crosby died away at the age of 81.

His wife, Jan Dance, shared the following statement with Variety: “It is with great regret that we announce that our beloved David (Croz) Crosby has gone away after a protracted illness.” He felt the warmth and companionship of his wife and soulmate Jan, as well as their son Django. Even if he is not physically here with us anymore, his kind spirit and generous humanity will continue to direct and motivate us.

She went on to say that his legacy will be carried on via the magnificent music that he created. All those who knew David and all those whose lives he impacted may find peace, love, and harmony. He will be greatly missed by all of us. As we mourn and attempt to come to terms with the immensity of our loss, we humbly and politely request privacy at this difficult time. I am grateful for the love and prayers that have been sent.
