Ministers in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet are set to undergo quarterly performance reviews, as disclosed by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, during a meeting with the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.
The VCs’ committee met with the Minister of Education to present a report detailing the challenges universities in the country are currently facing.
The delegation, led by Prof. Lilian Salami, Chairman of the VCs’ committee and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, discussed various critical challenges encountered by both public and private universities in Nigeria during the meeting. These challenges encompassed areas such as funding, staff recruitment, university autonomy, conflicting aspects of university laws with other legislation, and ongoing industrial disputes involving university-based unions.
The Minister of Education emphasized that President Tinubu is committed to revitalizing the nation and adopts a business-like approach to governance. As part of this approach, all ministers will undergo quarterly performance evaluations.
The meeting took place at the Federal Ministry of Education Secretariat in Abuja and was attended by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, David Adejo. Additionally, the delegation congratulated Prof. Tahir Mamman on being the first serving vice-chancellor to become the Minister of Education. The Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities also presented a study report titled “Challenges, Opportunities, and Sustainable Models for Nigerian Federal Universities” as part of their contribution to addressing the challenges faced by universities in the country.
