Former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, has expressed his disagreement with the notion that the Benin people have any rightful claim to the ownership of Lagos.

Asari argued that while it is true that the Bini army, with the assistance of the Ijaw army, attacked the small Lagos Island, they did not lay claim to any part of the state.

The recent claim made by the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, during a courtesy visit to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has sparked a debate. The Oba asserted that according to historical records, the Binis founded Lagos, stating, “It is in the history books that the Binis founded Lagos. When some people will hear it now, they will go haywire, what is the Oba saying there again? But it is true.”

Asari strongly criticized the Oba’s statement, considering it nonsense. He questioned the intelligence behind claiming that the Bini people founded Lagos and compared it to other instances where different armies attacked various places without asserting ownership.

He emphasized that the Bini army attacked only Lagos Island, not the entire Lagos, and it was the Ijaw people who ferried them, according to historical accounts.

Asari concluded by questioning the Oba’s assertion that Lagos belongs to Benin, expressing his disagreement with such a claim.
